Summary[]

Backstage[]

Season 1 Episode 13 The Sweet Hereafter Josie, Melody, Valerie (the Pussycats)

Josie thanking Archie for saving Cheryl

Backstage of the Jubilee, Archie struggles to play his guitar due to the injury he sustains while saving Cheryl at Sweetwater River. Veronica wonders if he should be playing with the condition that his hand is in. Freshman year, Archie played an entire season with a taped up hand, reassuring Veronica that he can still play. Veronica then recalls Archie's longing stare back at Southside High, when Betty and Jughead shared a hug, which in turn makes her question Archie's feelings for Betty. Archie explains that the moment Veronica is referring to is when he realized how good Betty and Jughead are together, and how it confirmed that he wants to be that for Veronica. As the two of them proceed to kiss, they are interrupted by Josie, who learned of Archie's heroic actions from Veronica, and decided to play his song at the Jubilee as a show of gratitude.

Archie Performing with the Pussycats[]

Mayor McCoy welcomes all as they enter the Town Hall. She kicks off the Jubilee with a performance by Josie and the Pussycats, who perform alongside the town's local hero, Archie. Against her mother's wishes, Josie announces to the crowd that instead of Astronaut, they will be playing an original song by Archie.

Betty's Speech[]

Season 1 Episode 13 The Sweet Hereafter 75th Anniversary Jubilee (2)

Betty giving her speech

Following Archie's wonderful performance with the Pussycats, Betty takes the stage to give her speech as one of two guests of honor. She first thanks Mayor McCoy for allowing her to speak at the event. Jughead enters the room soon thereafter. Gaining the much-needed confidence she needs from his unexpected arrival, Betty proceeds to give a powerful speech in relation to Riverdale and the crossroads in which they must face. - "Seventy-Five years of Riverdale. But what is Riverdale? It's people, right? You, me, our friends, our neighbors. Riverdale is Archie Andrews. Kevin Keller is Riverdale. Veronica Lodge, she's Riverdale. But you know who else is Riverdale? FP Jones. Who we were so quick to blame for Jason's murder. Jughead Jones is Riverdale. The very soul of Riverdale. Without him, we may not have ever found out what happened to Jason. And yet how do we thank him? By banishing him. Which is what we do when the truth gets too ugly in Riverdale. Truth being that Clifford Blossom was also Riverdale. Riverdale's at a crossroads. If we don't face the reality of who and what we are, if we keep lying to ourselves and keeping secrets from each other, then what happened to Jason could happen again. Or, God forbid, something even worse. Riverdale must do better. We must do better." The crowd then erupts with applause.

Aftermath[]

As the Jubilee comes to an end, Hermione catches up to Fred in the hallway to see if he has given her offer any further consideration, which he has. Unfortunately for Hermione, Fred has decided not to sell. Apparently, Betty's speech has resonated with him. He states that Riverdale is at a crossroads. He doesn't believe that selling is in Hermione's or the town's best interest. So, he'll be seeing her at work.

Season 1 Episode 13 The Sweet Hereafter Fred bleeding

Archie holding Fred as he bled from his gunshot wound

The following morning, Fred calls Archie down to Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe so that the two can have an important conversation over breakfast. However, as Archie enters the restroom to wash up, a hooded assailant enters the diner, and hold Pop Tate at gunpoint while demanding that he empty the register. As Archie exits the restroom after hearing all the commotion, the gunman turns his attention towards Fred, and demands his wallet. Archie, being the panic teen that he is, runs out in between the gunman and his father. Despite Archie's frantic decision, the gunman still manages to shoot Fred in the stomach. After firing that single shot, the gunman runs out of the shop, leaving a critically injured Fred for dead on the diner's floor.[1]

It is later revealed that the gunman, now known as the "Black Hood", attended the Jubilee, and in doing so, he was inspired by Betty's speech to hunt down the sinners of Riverdale, and make them repent for their sinful ways. Fred Andrews was merely his first target.[2]
