|— Betty gives a speech[src]|
Backstage of the Jubilee, Archie struggled to play his guitar due to the injury he sustained while saving Cheryl at Sweetwater River. Veronica wondered if he should be playing with the condition that his hand was in. Freshman year, Archie played an entire season with a taped up hand, reassuring Veronica that he could still play. Veronica then recalled Archie's longing stare back at Southside High, when Betty and Jughead shared a hug, which in turn made her question Archie's feelings for Betty. Archie explained that the moment Veronica was referring to is when he realized how good Betty and Jughead were together, and how it confirmed that he wanted to be that for Veronica. As the two of them proceeded to kiss, they were interrupted by Josie, who had learned of Archie's heroic actions from Veronica, and deiced to play his song at the Jubilee as a show of gratitude.
Archie Performing with the Pussycats
Mayor McCoy welcomed all as they entered the Town Hall. She kicked off the Jubilee with a performance by Josie and the Pussycats, who performed along side the town's local hero, Archie. Against her mother's wishes, Josie announced to the crowd that instead of Astronaut, they would be playing an original song by Archie.
Following Archie's wonderful performance with the Pussycats, Betty took the stage to give her speech as one of two guests of honor. She first thanked Mayor McCoy for allowing her to speak at the event. Jughead entered the room soon thereafter. Gaining the much needed confidence she needed from his unexpected arrival, Betty went on to give a powerful speech in relation to Riverdale and the crossroads in which they must face. - "Seventy-Five years of Riverdale. But what is Riverdale? It's people, right? You, me, our friends, our neighbors. Riverdale is Archie Andrews. Kevin Keller is Riverdale. Veronica Lodge, she's Riverdale. But you know who else is Riverdale? FP Jones. Who we were so quick to blame for Jason's murder. Jughead Jones is Riverdale. The very soul of Riverdale. Without him, we may not have ever found out what happened to Jason. And yet how do we thank him? By banishing him. Which is what we do when the truth gets too ugly in Riverdale. Truth being that Clifford Blossom was also Riverdale. Riverdale's at a crossroads. If we don't face the reality of who and what we are, if we keep lying to ourselves and keeping secrets from each other, then what happened to Jason could happen again. Or, God forbid, something even worse. Riverdale must do better. We must do better." The crowd then erupted with applause.
As the Jubilee came to an end, Hermione caught up to Fred in the hallway to see if he had given her offer any further consideration, which he had. Unfortunately for Hermione, Fred had decided not to sell. Apparently, Betty's speech had resonated with him. He stated that Riverdale was at a crossroads. He didn't believe that selling was in Hermione's or the town's best interest.
The following morning, Fred called Archie down to Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe so that the two could have an important conversation over breakfast. However, as Archie entered the restroom to wash up, a hooded assailant entered the diner, and held Pop Tate at gunpoint while demanding that he empty the register. As Archie exited the restroom after hearing all the commotion, the gunman turned his attention towards Fred, and demanded his wallet. Archie, being the panic teen that he is, ran out in between the gunman and his father. Despite Archie's frantic decision, the gunman still managed to shoot Fred in the stomach. After firing that single shot, the gunman ran out of the shop, leaving a critically injured Fred for dead on the diner's floor.
It was later revealed that the gunman, now known as the "Black Hood", attended the Jubilee, and in doing so, he was inspired by Betty's speech to hunt down the sinners of Riverdale, and make them repent for their sinful ways. Fred Andrews was merely his first target.
