Veronica: "Why did you invite me tonight? Why not Tina or Ginger? Aren't they your besties?"
Cheryl: "And yet, that night at the pep rally, after I had my panic attack, you helped me. Not them."
Cheryl and Veronica talking about their friendship[src]

The relationship between Cheryl Blossom and Veronica Lodge is currently quite complicated. The two had quite a rivalry from the moment Veronica moved to Riverdale, however, she sought to make friends with Cheryl as she did not believe being enemies would end well.

Their rivalry continued when Veronica learned that Cheryl's family may have had something to do with her father's imprisonment.

Unlike Cheryl, Veronica tries to not have any enemies since she moved to Riverdale. Even though Veronica and Cheryl may have their differences. Whenever Cheryl is going through a tough time, Veronica always seems to be their for her to try and comfort her.

History

While Cheryl and Veronica have no direct history with one another, their parents do. Cheryl's mother and father attended Riverdale High School with Veronica's mother and father.

Throughout Riverdale

Season 1

Veronica and Cheryl first met at the beginning of Veronica's sophomore year at Riverdale High School. Cheryl joined Betty, Kevin and Veronica at their lunch table and invited Veronica to attend cheerleading tryouts for the River Vixens, of which she captained. Veronica accepted the invitation and brought Betty with her. However, Cheryl was not happy with Betty trying out for the team and goaded her about her sister Polly, who had dated Cheryl's late brother Jason. Veronica stood up for Betty and refused to join the team unless Betty was chosen too, which Cheryl ultimately relented to.

To get back at Betty and Veronica, Cheryl invited the two of them and Archie to her Semi-formal after party. She knew that Betty had feelings for Archie and schemed to cause trouble. She forced the three to play Seven Minutes in Heaven, which ended with Veronica and Archie kissing in a closet and Betty fleeing the party upset. Veronica called Cheryl a 'shady bitch' before she left.[1]

Season 1 episode 2 A Touch of Evil Cheryl Veronica

Veronica comforts Cheryl during the pep-rally.

The annual fall Pep Rally, which was held at the school, featured a performance by the Riven Vixens, accompanied by Josie and the Pussycats. As the Riverdale Bulldogs made their entrance, Cheryl saw Archie come through, who looked just as Jason had when he was on the team, and began having a panic attack and ran off the stage to everyone's surprise. Despite their dislike of each other, Veronica went after her and comforted a distraught Cheryl after she broke down in tears over her brother.[2]

After a date with Chuck Clayton, Veronica was subsequently slut-shamed by him, something he and his friends on the football team had done to numerous other girls as well. Cheryl, however, was very unsympathetic and called her and the other girls sluts. Veronica then learned that Chuck and his boys kept score of their supposed 'conquests', and kept track in a secret playbook. Unfortunately, they needed proof before they could go to Principal Weatherbee with the information. Veronica insisted that neither she nor any of the girls were lying and that even without proof, she promised that Chuck and his posse would face justice. If Cheryl wanted to get caught in that back-draft, all she had to do was refer to any of them as sluts one more time. This lead to a tense stand-off between the two rivals, that ended in Cheryl deciding to help Veronica get revenge. They briefly worked together to acquire the playbook and take down the football players responsible for the slut-shaming.[3]

In a booth at Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe with Ginger Lopez and Tina Patel, Cheryl voiced her disapproval of Veronica's mother Hermione working at the diner. She claimed it was off-brand, and sent a false message about acceptance. Had she known about it beforehand, Veronica never would have landed a spot on the River Vixens. As Hermione reached to collect their bill, Cheryl Insulted her and Veronica went over to defend her mother. However, Hermione took the money, but not before reminding Cheryl that she went to school with her mother, Penelope Blossom and that she didn't know the difference between having money and having class either. Just minutes after her dispute with Hermione Lodge, Cheryl caught her in the middle of a heated argument with a Southside Serpent behind the dumpster at Pop's. Cheryl took a picture of the encounter as evidence, which she would later go on to show Veronica, the next day at school, with the intent to remind Veronica of her place within the town's social hierarchy.

Later that night, Cheryl inexplicably joined Veronica and Kevin at the Twilight Drive-In for its closing night showing of 'Rebel Without a Cause'.[4]

During a break at school, all of the group, including a surprised Veronica, received an invitation from Cheryl to her brother's memorial service. However, her invitation didn't come without Cheryl's usual level of disdain, and so with Jason's recent passing in mind, Veronica took it upon herself to disregard Cheryl's attitude and extend an olive branch in hopes of avoiding mutual annihilation. Cheryl accepted her gesture and invited Veronica to a sleepover she was holding at her place, the night before the memorial.

Season 1 Episode 5 Heart of Darkness Cheryl Veronica

Veronica attends Cheryl's sleepover.

In the following days, Veronica would come to stay at Cheryl's, as they agreed, but first had to endure a very uncomfortable dinner with her family. Later that night, Veronica and Cheryl spent time looking through an old photo album of Jason. Veronica described him as "crazy handsome", to which Cheryl agreed, then told Veronica that Jason would have liked her. She asked why Cheryl invited her over instead of Ginger and Tina since they were her best friends and Cheryl explained that Veronica was the only person who came to her aid during her panic attack at the pep rally. She then went on to talk about Jason, she said everything about his death had been extremely public, with some saying he got what he deserved, others saying he didn't. Cheryl just wanted to let everyone know that she was sorry and that Jason deserved a better family than what he got. Veronica encouraged Cheryl to do the eulogy she had prepared, and say goodbye to her brother, despite her parents forbidding her to do so.

On the day of the memorial, Veronica and Cheryl planned how the day would play out, though Cheryl surprised Veronica and the other guests when she entered the room in the same all white outfit she had worn during her and Jason's ill-fated boat trip. After an emotional eulogy, Veronica joined Cheryl up on the podium to offer comfort and took her back to her seat. Afterward, Veronica watched from outside Cheryl's bedroom as she was harshly scolded by Penelope for her disobedience. After a first-hand look at the life Cheryl had to endure on a daily basis, Veronica felt quite bad for her.[5]

After it was revealed that Polly Cooper was pregnant with Jason's baby, Veronica offered to throw a baby shower for her at The Pembrooke. Polly had been living there since her own parents didn't want her to keep her baby, and Penelope and Cliff Blossom only wanted the baby without Polly. Cheryl commented that she wholeheartedly supported Veronica's notion of throwing the shower and happily attended.[6]

At school, Archie revealed to Veronica that, at the banquet, the Blossoms had held that he attended with Cheryl, he had overheard Mr. Blossom say that he was the one responsible for her father being arrested and imprisoned. Shocked, Veronica wondered why Clifford Blossom would have anything to do with why her dad was in prison, however, Archie didn't know. Later, Veronica did some digging and found a spreadsheet listing 75 years of payments from Blossom Maple Farms to Lodge Industries, that had stopped coming when Hiram was arrested. She wondered if Cliff Blossom had put her father in jail to get out of paying the fee, however, Hermione advised her daughter to let it go because if the payments were revealed, people might think Hiram was responsible for Jason Blossom's murder. She told Veronica not to tell anyone, and that included Cheryl.

Season 1 Episode 10 Cheryl Veronica

Veronica and Cheryl's dance battle.

Later, Veronica showed up late to River Vixen practice, missing the choreography rehearsal for the upcoming homecoming dance and Cheryl declared that Veronica would be placed in the back as a result. Angry at the Blossoms for what she had discovered, Veronica picked a fight with Cheryl, who welcomed Veronica to challenge her, however, Veronica preferred to let the rest of the squad weigh in and the two had a dance-off to see who was the better dancer and would feature front and center at homecoming. Veronica was unanimously declared the winner, much to Cheryl's displeasure.

To get her revenge, Cheryl crashed Jughead's 16th Birthday Party, bringing much of the school with her. Gathering everyone in the living room of the Andrews house, Cheryl decided they were going to play a game she called 'Secrets & Sins' and started off by attacking Veronica and her family, revealing to the entire party that her father, Hiram Lodge secretly purchased the Twilight Drive-In from behind bars. Veronica quickly turned the game back on Cheryl, accusing her of having inappropriate feelings for her brother, Jason, and murdering him with on of her father's hunting rifle's when he chose Polly over her. Affected, a tear rolled down Cheryl's face before she caught herself and the next person took their turn.[7]

After her father Cliff Blossom was discovered to be Jason's killer, and subsequently took his own life, Cheryl underwent a bout of depression. She gave Veronica her HBIC shirt and acknowledged her as the new captain of the Vixens. Veronica was appreciative and sympathetic.

Cheryl sent Veronica a text soon after, thanking her for trying, but effectively announcing her intention to take her own life. Veronica, along with Archie, Betty, and Jughead hurried to Sweetwater River to stop her and saved her when she fell through the ice. Veronica subsequently took her to her home at The Pembrooke to warm up and told her mother Hermione that she'd been in an accident.[8]

Cheryl and Josie at Cheerleading practice

As Veronica and Betty entered the gymnasium for River Vixens practice, Cheryl greeted them as Humpty and Dumpty. She then introduced them to Josie, the latest recruit of the River Vixens. This left Veronica questioning if Cheryl was taking the squad back from her, to which Cheryl replied that they were never really Veronica's squad to begin with. Betty was hoping that maybe Cheryl would be kind enough to allow the Vixens to help with an event to save Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe from permanently closing. Unfortunately for Betty, Cheryl did not emerge from the frozen depths of Sweetwater River, nor the flames of Thornhill only to allow her Vixens to sling milkshakes at a death-cursed diner. Her answer was a "double-cherry-on-top no."[9]

Cheryl, Veronica, and Midge during practice

During River Vixen practice on the football field, Cheryl, Veronica and Midge gave a quick look to the flyers going around town, involving Archie and his community group watch named The Red Circle. However, Cheryl didn't appear to give it much thought, before walking off aggravatedly. [10]

After Mr. Weatherbee attempted to disband the Red Circle, which was being led by Archie to protect Riverdale, Veronica sought out Cheryl to help promote and give away t-shirts in support of the community group watch. With Cheryl's help, the Circle was no longer a fringe band of radicals, rather a movement with style and panache.[11]

Nick's party

Upon the arrival of Nick St. Clair, an old friend of hers from New York, was coming to town for her parents' SoDale Gala Opening, Veronica introduced him to all her friends. After becoming acquainted with them, Cheryl included, Nick invited them all to a party in his hotel room at the Five Seasons hotel. Though they didn't interact, both Veronica and Cheryl attended this party along with Archie, Betty, Kevin, Reggie, Josie, Valerie, and Melody. Per her father's orders, Veronica was supposed to be showing him a good time. With that in mind, Veronica agreed to join Nick, as did Cheryl, without hesitation. Veronica asked if Betty would be partaking as well, though she showed no interest. Neither did Archie initially. But he had a sudden change of heart, and agreed to participate. High off the Jingle Jangle, Veronica sensually danced with Archie in the middle of the room as Cheryl danced on the couch with Kevin. Unfortunately, the party ended there for most of them after a fight between Betty and Veronica ensued, during which time, Betty said a number of awful things about Veronica, claiming that they were merely friends of circumstance and that she was a bad person. This confrontation ended with Veronica telling Betty to leave since she perceived her to be such a monster.

Veronica and Pussycats attacking Nick

After a hard night of partying, Cheryl attended the open house event that was being hosted by the Lodges, where she was greeted by Nick, upon arrival. They didn't get much of a chance to talk at the party. Cheryl was choosing to blame Betty's Britneyesque meltdown for that, though she was willing to let Nick make it up to her. His first step in making it up was grabbing her a drink. Unbeknownst to Cheryl, Nick had slipped a date rape drug into her drink before giving it to her. After Veronica's father made an announcement in regards to the SoDale site and his plan to reinvent the Southside, Cheryl danced with Nick as the Pussycats performed on stage. Though, the effects of the drugs given to her by Nick were fast acting. Cheryl began to lose her balance. Hardly capable of standing on her own two feet, Nick escorted her into the house, and laid her on the bed. Barely conscious, Cheryl was incapable of fending off her attacker. After suspecting that Nick had spiked Cheryl's drink, Veronica led the Pussycats to Nick's room. She burst in moments before Nick could rape Cheryl. She pulled Nick off of Cheryl, slapping him and shoved him away from her. Veronica, with Pussycats help, proceed to beat Nick up - punching and kicking him until he is rendered unconscious.

Josie and Veronica comforting Cheryl

After the open house, Cheryl was taken to the Pembrooke by Josie, Veronica, Archie, and Betty. Archie asked where Nick was in that moment, though Cheryl instructed him to put his cape away because the Pussycats had already saved her. Veronica felt sick about the entire incident. Nick was a monster, who she suspected of having attacked woman before. Cheryl announced that she would be pressing charges because she wanted him to be held accountable for his actions, for him to suffer and burn in hell for what he tried to do to her. As Cheryl began to sob, Josie and Veronica held her close, attempting to provide comfort in her time of need.[12]

Cheryl and Veronica eavesdropping

From her bedroom, [[Veronica Lodge]|Veronica]] and Cheryl eavesdropped on their parents' discussion on how best to handle Nick St. Clair, who attempted to rape Cheryl. Outside the bedroom, in the living room, Penelope Blossom accused Cheryl of provoking Nick, though according to Veronica, Cheryl did no such thing. Regardless, Penelope wanted the incident handled discreetly, and by that she meant not at all, as she would be telling Sheriff Keller that they were no longer seeking to press charges. Veronica sympathized with Cheryl's pain, though Cheryl attempted to play it off, claiming that everything was fine, but Veronica saw right past it all. Cheryl claimed that she had a momentary lapse in sanity, but she was better. She no longer wanted to pursue a case against Nick. Veronica tried to reason with Cheryl as she prepared to leave, explaining that Nick had done it to many girls before her. Veronica added that Nick made sexual advances towards her as well. But she put a stop to it. Upon learning that she had kept this from her parents, Cheryl accused Veronica of trying to use her as her very own "puppet for vengeance". If Veronica wanted justice, Cheryl told her to go after Nick in court.

Veronica at the street race with Betty, Reggie, Kevin, and Cheryl

After calling Veronica to alert her of her parents' involvement with the St. Clairs, Cheryl attended the drag race being held near Herk Harvey bridge between Archie and Jughead and two members of a Southside gang called the Ghoulies. Veronica and Cheryl sat alongside Kevin, Reggie, and Betty as the race was about to commence. Cheryl took to the center of the road as flag girl, asking both drivers if they were ready before waving her flag, signaling the start of the race, which was later intercepted by Sheriff Keller and the police department, thus ending the event as everyone scattered at the news of police involvement.[13]

While passing through the halls of school, with Josie, Cheryl stumbled upon Veronica and Archie in the middle of a heavy make out session in the student lounge. Cheryl uttered "get a room, Xenomorphs", just before as she and Josie continued on their way.[14]

Jughead, Cheryl, Kevin, and Veronica at the secret Santa exchange

In the student lounge at school, Veronica and Cheryl attended the Secret Santa gift exchange with Archie, Betty, Reggie, Kevin, Jughead and Josie. Veronica opened her gift from Josie, which awkwardly enough was a gift certificate for a couples massage. Josie suggested that Veronica use the certificate to take someone other than Archie, given that they were no longer together, such as Betty or her mother. Thankfully, Betty was the last exchange for the evening, as the sudden awkwardness was too much to withstand. Based on the wrapping of her present, Betty instantly knew that it was Archie that picked her name. Veronica watched with a look of concern as Betty unwrapped the gift to find and old read-a-long record that she and Archie used to listen to when they were younger, entitled "The Swiss Family Robinson". Archie informed her that he and his father found it while they were cleaning out the garage. Moose and Midge then entered the lounge to join them for the Holiday event.[15]

Cheryl and Reggie antagonizing the newcomers

After learning that Southside High was shutting down and that some of its students were transferring to Riverdale High School, Cheryl and Reggie interrupted Veronica's welcoming committee for the Southside transfers (Jughead, Toni, Sweet Pea and Fogarty) with the River Vixens and the Bulldogs in tow. Cheryl approached the registration desk, hurling insults at the Serpents, calling them "Southside scum" and "raggamuffins". Cheryl refused to allow Riverdale High's above average GPA to suffer because of overcrowded classrooms with underachievers such as themselves. Cheryl told them to find another school to deface with their "hardscrabble ways". In doing so, she offended Toni, who dared Cheryl to say it to her face. Just as the two were about to face off, Archie stepped in the middle of them, hoping to put their Northside and Southside differences aside to start over. The rivaling sides went back and forth until Mr. Weatherbee arrived to send them off to class.

Cheryl apologizing to Veronica

The next day, after Archie had recovered the check from Nick St. Clair for reparations and assaulted him in the process, Cheryl entered the music room to reveal to Veronica that she had unintentionally told Archie about Nick's sexual advances after the Five Seasons party and why Archie had gone to New York, behind her back. Cheryl claimed that it was a classic shakedown. She wanted money from Nick and she thought that Archie could convince him that reparations were in order. Her only regret was that she betrayed Veronica's confidence. Cheryl then issued an apology before walking out.[16]

Cheryl attended the Pickens Day celebration with her mother, where the two of them watched from the crowd as Veronica and the Pussycats performed on stage. However, half way through their performance, the Southside Serpents unexpectedly arrived protesting the celebration with duct-tape over their mouths as they held signs that read 'honor this land' and 'sacred land'.[17]

River Vixens practice ended with Toni's performance before the squad which impressed Cheryl. Afterward, in honor of Toni becoming a Vixen, Cheryl invited Veronica, Betty, Josie, and Toni over to Thistlehouse for a mandatory slumber party.

The slumber party

During the slumber party at Thistlhouse, Cheryl revealed her true intentions behind inviting them over. It wasn't to celebrate. Cheryl confessed that she terrified of being alone at the house with her uncle Claudius, who was crazy and a complete stranger to her. Cheryl had overheard her mother and uncle plotting against her and her Nana. Josie questioned if she was possibly imagining things. But if Cheryl was, then so was Betty, who was dealing with a similar circumstance. There was a stranger in her life as well, Chic. With him lurking in every corner, her house felt dangerous and deadly. After hearing a loud thump, the girls ran into the hallway to find Nana Rose unconscious at the bottom of the steps. It would seem she had fell or even been pushed. Fortunately, she survived the fall and was taken to Riverdale General Hospital.[18]

Veronica learning of Cheryl's disappearance

During River Vixens practice, Veronica and Josie were told by Toni that Cheryl was missing. Toni was certain that Cheryl's mother had something to do with it since she recalled Cheryl mentioning to them how she was concerned that her mother and uncle Claudius were out to get her. Cheryl's mother claimed that they sent her off to an all-girls boarding school in Switzerland, but Toni was unconvinced considering that Cheryl would be posting selfies every hour if this was true. But she hadn't. In fact, her social media had been dead for days, which Josie and Veronica were convinced was a sure sign of foul-play. So the two of them agreed to help Toni find Cheryl, even if they had to storm Thistlehouse.

Toni, Veronica and Josie investigating Cheryl's disappearance

The next day, Veronica, Josie and Toni barged into Thistlehouse and demanded answers on Cheryl's whereabouts. When Penelope refused to answer, Josie threatened to have her mom tell the Sheriff that Cheryl was missing. Seeking to avoid any unwanted attention, Penelope complied. She revealed that the truth was that Cheryl started to exhibit strange, deviant behavior. So, she was sent abroad to a private wellness institute where they were trying to help her. In case they didn't believe her, Penelope gave them a drawing of Cheryl's that depicted Josie and Cheryl together, which strongly resembled the drawing that Josie had accused Chuck of drawing. This meant that it wasn't Chuck who threatened Josie and sent her a pig's heart, but instead, it was Cheryl, who had grown obsessed with her. Penelope feared that Cheryl would either hurt Josie, herself or both of them. Josie, Veronica and Toni then exited Thistlehouse to regroup but in light of recent events, Josie wanted no parts of Cheryl's search and rescue.

And so Veronica and Toni continued their investigation without Josie, but with Kevin who told them that the Sisters of Quiet Mercy still did gay conversion therapy. On that note, the three of them plotted to rescue Cheryl from the Sisters. They convened by the tunnels in Fox Forest that led into the main building. Kevin stayed outside while Veronica and Toni went in hoping to find Cheryl. They found her and then made their escape, just barely beating the Sisters out of the tunnels.[19]

Quotes

I know what you need, Cheryl, because I know who you are. You would rather people fear than like you, so you traffic in terror and intimidation. You're rich, so you've never been held accountable, but I'm living proof. That certainty, that entitlement you wear on your head like a crown? It won't last. Eventually, there will be a reckoning. Or... Maybe that reckoning is now. And maybe that reckoning... is me. Betty and I come as a matching set, you want one, you take us both. You wanted fire? Sorry Cheryl 'Bombshell', my specialty's ice.
