But I am changing. I started going to church with my dad and I'm taking these art classes. [...] I wanna draw comics or kids' books. [...] Josie, I really am trying to be better.
— Chuck to Josie McCoy[src]

Charles "Chuck" Clayton is a recurring character on The CW's Riverdale. He is portrayed by Jordan Calloway.

Chuck is a student at Riverdale High School and a former football player for the Riverdale Bulldogs. He was kicked off the team by Coach Clayton after confessing to spreading false rumors of sexually explicit acts between himself and Veronica Lodge. For this, he holds a grudge against Veronica and Betty, as this resulted in him not being able to play football for a good college or university.

Early Life[]

Unlike most teens in Riverdale, Chuck was not born there. He was once the new kid, so he told Veronica Lodge, and it was not easy, as his father was the new teacher as well as the new coach.

Throughout Riverdale[]

Physical Appearance[]

Chuck is an outwardly handsome, tall, brown-skinned teenage guy with shaven hair, deep brown eyes, and a muscular physique. He dresses rather casually, often wearing denim jeans with his blue and gold Riverdale Bulldogs varsity jacket.

Personality[]

Chuck was the typical Alpha-male douchebag and held no regard for anyone other than himself. He had a very poor view of women, looking at them as if they were nothing more than objects for his amusement. Chuck was quite arrogant and very confident in his abilities. Being captain of the Riverdale Bulldogs came with high prestige. He was Riverdale's very own golden boy, loved by many, which he used to his benefit. Months later, however, Chuck appeared to have changed to some degree. With his football career over, Chuck instead pursued art, as well as attending church. He was respectful to Josie (if still somewhat flirty), though his unsavory past still ended up catching up to him. However, Chuck was able to convince Veronica, Betty, Archie and Jughead that he had changed for the better. After the gang took notice of Chuck's change of behavior after he joined the school's musical in an attempt to re-shape his image.

Relationships[]

Veronica Lodge[]

Season 1 Episode 3 Body Double Chuck and sticky maple Veronica

At the start of their Sophomore year, Chuck pursued Veronica. The pair even went out on a single date. It was both their first and last, however. Veronica opened up to him, and he did the same, sharing that he was once the new student at Riverdale and that he could relate to the struggles she was enduring. However, the very next day, Chuck began to spread rumors and lies about what actually happened on his date with Veronica, claiming that he gave her a "sticky maple," which is a Riverdale form of slut-shaming. Veronica, along with Betty, decided then that they would take Chuck down. So, they gathered other victims and evidence against him, and as a result of this, Chuck was suspended as well as banned from the varsity football team.

Betty Cooper[]

Season 1 Episode 10 The Lost Weekend Chuck vs Betty

Betty has always been weary of Chuck given his reputation as a player, which she warned Veronica of. It was through his interactions with Veronica that Betty's feelings for Chuck progressed from weary to hateful, eventually leading to them becoming bitter rivals. When Chuck began spreading rumors that he gave Veronica a "sticky maple," Betty assisted Veronica in taking Chuck down, starting with finding his other victims, this led to Betty and Veronica staging a setup at Ethel's house, during which time they handcuffed him in the hot tub and forced him to admit on camera that he lied about his relationship with Veronica. It was Betty's actions during this night that led Chuck to believe that Betty was crazy, referring to her as "Dark Betty." Following his suspension, Chuck makes an appearance at Jughead's party, where he reveals to everyone in attendance just how crazy Betty is. This results in a fight between him and Jughead.

Josie McCoy[]

Whilst Chuck and Josie may not have come in close contact, Chuck took a liking to her. When he entered the music room, he was amazed by her voice. However, Josie didn't return the warm greetings, as she knew his past with women and would never date a "chauvinist, misogynistic, harasser of woman" such as himself. However, she did allow him to give her a ride home one evening, but not before they stopped at Pop's. Even though Josie insisted that they weren't on a date, they did bond more than they ever had before. Chuck claimed that he'd changed for the better, and even though Pop Tate validated his claims, Chuck's pasted continued to help haunt him, as Josie's mother wasn't happy to find them together. Sierra then threatened him to stay away from her daughter before dragging her out of the diner. Unfortunately, Chuck's relationship with Josie would continue to deteriorate. At school, when Josie received a disturbing message from a mysterious admirer, she confronted Chuck in the library, resulting in him getting escorted to the principal's office.

Trivia[]

  • According to actor Jordan Calloway, Chuck was indeed attempting to apologize to Ethel in "Chapter Ten: The Lost Weekend".[1]
  • Much like his Archie Comics counterpart, Chuck is an aspiring cartoonist, who has shown an interest in comic book illustration. However, unlike his comic book self, he is not part of Archie and the Gang.
  • In the comics, Chuck is Nancy Woods' boyfriend. They are among Archie Comics' long-standing couples while other characters changed love interests. This was because interracial couples were considered "controversial".
